Ramnagar Fort is not in Varanasi's old city. It stands across the water on the eastern bank of the Ganges, facing the ghats from the opposite side — which is exactly why the view from it is different, and exactly why people underestimate the journey.
Where it actually is
The fort sits at Ramnagar, on the far bank, roughly opposite Tulsi Ghat. From the main ghats you can see it across the river; getting to it means going around, not across.
By road it is about 20 to 30 minutes from central Varanasi in ordinary traffic. On a festival evening it is not ordinary traffic.
Getting there
By taxi or auto. The simplest option, and the one nearly everyone uses. Any driver in the city knows Ramnagar Fort — it is a landmark, not an address you have to explain. Agree the fare before you set off, and ask for the fort's main gate.
From Varanasi Junction (Cantt) railway station. The station is on the north-western side of the city, so allow longer than you would from the ghats — this is close to a cross-city run before you even start toward the bridge.
From Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport. The airport is well outside the city to the north-west. Plan on a considerably longer transfer, and do not schedule it tightly against a festival evening.
By boat. Boats do cross, and on any ordinary day it is a pleasant way to arrive. On Dev Deepawali, when the river is at its busiest, it is not a plan to rely on for getting somewhere at a fixed time.
When to leave on Dev Deepawali night
This is the part people get wrong. On 24 November the roads around the riverfront carry a crowd the city does not see on any other night, and routes near the ghats can be restricted.
Leave far earlier than the map tells you to. If you are booked onto an evening that starts at the fort, treat the stated arrival time as the time you should already be inside the gates, not the time you set off.
Akashganga guests are sent check-in and arrival details after booking, with the timings for that specific evening — which is the only version that accounts for how the roads are actually managed on the night.
What is there when you arrive
The fort is a working royal residence rather than a restored ruin, and it is worth arriving with time in hand. Its Saraswati Bhawan museum holds vintage cars, lotus-shaped palanquins and a century-old astronomical clock, and the courtyards and temples remain in daily use. There is more about its history in our piece on the fort.
One practical note: boarding the cruise from the fort's ghat requires climbing stairs. Guests need to be able to manage stairs independently or with someone accompanying them.
